Musical Monday: Beach Blanket Bingo
I totally forgot it was Monday, so this will be quick! I can not count how many times I have watched this movie. I could watch it a million more times, easily. It's a pretty typical beach party movie but I love it to death.
This scene isn't in the movie (at least not the VHS version I have) but I'm pretty sure the music is used as background music.

Lucky Thrift Finds!!!
All the vintage Christmas ornaments at the antique mall are always really expensive. I joked to my mom that I could probably find a box-full for a dollar at a thrift store sooner or later. Sure enough, there was bag of them today for about a dollar! How lucky is that? There were over a dozen, and I only need to fix the tops on a few. These are my favorites:

Musical Monday: Gene Kelly
Instead of posting about one movie, I decided to post some different clips of movies Gene Kelly has been in. Our love affair started in my 6th grade music class when the teacher played Singing in the Rain. Being a typical snotty middle-schooler, I couldn't believe we were being forced to watch such a "dumb" movie. Of course I ended up loving it. I don't know what I was thinking before, because it's not like I didn't already like musicals or old movies. Just being a jerk I guess.

Musical Monday: Thoroughly Modern Millie
I suppose it's technically Monday (by my time zone at least). Thoroughly Modern Millie is about a lady (Julie Andrews) in the 1920s who wants to be "fully modern" so she has big plans of working AND marrying her rich boss! Of course that doesn't go exactly as planned. There is also a second story line about girls being kidnapped and sold into white slavery. I actually only saw this movie recently, even though a good friend recommended it to me a long time ago. I love Julie Andrews and flappers, so I really don't know what took me so long. I couldn't find a good video of it, but my favorite scenes are when they are using a broken elevator. It only starts working when people start tap dancing. I always have an urge to tap dance whenever I'm in any elevator now. Here are two musical clips from the movie, and a totally random clip of Angela Lansbury singing the theme song.

Mary Jane Mania
I have a pretty bad shoe addiction. Not that I would EVER pick a favorite type, but if I really thought about it, Mary Janes would most likely be in the top 3. They're cute, they go with everything, and anyone can pull them off. I own tons of flats, but I've been on the hunt for the perfect pair of high heel Mary Janes forever (I'm actually pretty picky). I finally found them at Target! I bought them in black, but they also came in a burgundy/reddish color. Target only had black pairs in my size, which was good. It would have been hard to choose between both colors.
Winter break is coming up, and I finally replaced my camera that I destroyed a few months ago. What does this mean? Lot's more blogging coming soon!

Thanks Mom!!!
I went to a vintage store today to pick up a necklace for my sister that I had seen when I was there the last time. I wasn't planning on getting anything for myself until my mom found one of the most glorious/gaudy purses. She talked me into letting her buy it for me as an early Christmas present (ok, so it wasn't that hard of an argument haha).
I also got a pair of pinkish/brownish gloves. I'm not dainty so I was pleasantly shocked that I found some gloves that were actually big enough! I came home and had my own fashion show with my "new" purse and gloves with my fake fur coat. I ended up wearing that outfit the whole night on the couch, watching TV and eating pizza (I did take the gloves off for the food). Only the classiest activities for the classiest of girls. ;)
The pictures of the purse do NOT do it justice. It's way more awesome in person.

Records Galore!
I went thrifting with some friends today, and one store had records for a dollar. I wasn't planning on buying anything (famous last words), but I started browsing some of them while my friend was trying on clothes. They had some awesome records that I could not resist.
I have no idea what this is yet. It has singing nuns, so obviously it will be amazing.
I've been meaning to get the soundtrack for Chicago forever
This was my favorite one! I almost passed by it because I already have a Sound of Music record. Then it registered that it was with MARY MARTIN!!! I adore her, and didn't even know this existed!!! I'm going to have to go back to listening to this album every day between classes. I'm sure my roommates will be thrilled!

There was also a corner in the store with a repo-original Barbie, a set of Lucy and Ethel dolls, and a Guys and Dolls poster. That was obviously the "me" section of the store but I didn't get any of those things :( I can't wait until I'm not a broke college student!

Pink with envy?
My friend, Jessica is in town. We went vintage shopping with another friend of ours today. I'm super jealous of Jessica because she came away with two 1950s dresses and a pink 1960s(?) cloak. I wore one of the dresses she bought and we had a fashion show back at my house. I really love the dress she loaned me. I should have stolen it :)

Halloween Fever!!!
Halloween is probably one of my all time favorite things in life. This year I'm going to be Mary Poppins. I'm actually using a lot of pieces from a steam punk costume I threw together for a science fiction convention a few years ago. Who knew I would end up getting a second use out of some of those things. I only need a couple more things and my costume should be done! I'm getting super excited! What is everyone else dressing up as?

Yes, I am a crazy cat lady
These cats seriously love my luggage. Of all the snuggly places in my room they COULD choose to sleep, they fight over who gets to sit on top of the CLOSED suitcase. At least Grey Cat has the right idea sometimes.

One of my best friends from high school had been in town this month, and she stayed with me for a bit. I mentioned to people that we had been staying up until 4am for most of the week. They, of course, figured we had been out partying it up like college kids should be. The look on their faces when I told them that we had spent those nights listening to records from the 40s and playing with cats was priceless. I've been super obsessed with this song this week:

Awesome find!
I went to Goodwill today on a total whim. I ended up finding two really awesome 1960s suitcases. The best part is they're almost identical to a suitcase I have been eyeing on etsy, but the seller has been on "vacation" forever. They're in great shape, and smell like glorious old ladies. I couldn't be happier.

Hair High
Bill Plympton is one of my favorite animators of all time. I was so excited when he made a movie called "Hair High" that was set in the 50s. It's basically a story of two lovers that get murdered on the way to prom. Then they come back from the dead so they can finally have that magical prom date they had been waiting for. It's slightly on the weird/gross side, but I would recommend it to any fans of Cry Baby (or weird indie movies in general). I know I loved it. It's not on Netflix (yet) but if anyone is interested in it, you can buy a copy at http://plymptoons.com/ The soundtrack is really fun too. And just for fun, here is a picture of when I got to meet Bill Plympton at a film festival thing a couple years ago. He was super nice, and super tall. I just about died.

I'm not dead, just lazy :)
It's been a while, hasn't it? I survived my Spanish class, and have been home for the summer for the month. I finally went thrifting with a couple of friends last week. I found and bought that great peacock purse. I really have no idea how old it is, but it was too cute. The only thing the tag on the inside says is "Made in Hong Kong" so it's kind of mysterious! There was another purse just like it, only it had flowers on the front and wasn't as awesome. I also found two really cute pillbox hats but one was made out of real fur (which I'm not into) and one just didn't fit quite right. I wish I had at least taken a picture of the hats.
I thought about buying them to sell on etsy or ebay. I'm kind of undecided about doing that in the first place. On one hand, it could be a fun way to get a little extra spending money when I'm away at school. On the second hand, I probably couldn't put that much time or money into it since I would be away/busy at school. Does anyone out there have any advice for me about that?

I lucked out this weekend
I'm taking a summer class, and my last test/oral exam/final are all this week so I'll keep this short and sweet. I was back home visiting this weekend and went to the antique mall with my Mom. I got some super cute earrings, my mom bought me this great travel/train case, and then gave me a bunch of jewelry that belonged to my Grandma. SCORE!

Flapper Prom Dress
My sister just had her prom, and she wore an awesome flapper inspired dress. AND she was Prom Queen! She told me that she actually tried doing the Charleston, but it was too hard to do in heels to bad rap music. I wish I had thought to wear vintage to my prom. It was surprising enough that I even went in the first place. Not to mention I actually had a date, and he was a straight dude. Oh well.
